As though it were native Australian, Alphonse Karr proudly displays in Green & Gold striped culms that fan from the base. It looks striking in a pot or trough or as a stand alone garden feature, in the frostiest of positions. It is a versatile plant in that it can be left to its own devices, trimmed into shape or thinned out for effect.
Its 3 to 4 mtr height doesn’t preclude it from screening and if height trimmed, the plant will bush to form a very dense screen. Quite narrow at the base, Alphonse will fan out peacock fashion to display its attractive green foliage. New shoots leave their subterranean nursery as lovely pinkish gems that transform to striking gold culms after a few months of growth even in the coolest of climates – it loves the cold. Full growth can be achieved in a few seasons and even quicker with more advanced plants.
Alphonse Karr’s natural footprint is 1 mtr and your bed would need to be that wide for the plant to reach its full potential. The good news is that if your bed is smaller (no less than 500mm recommended), your plant can still display beautifully, just a little smaller. If using for a screen, the width of your bed should determine the spacing of your plants i.e. 1mtr wide bed = plant 1 mtr apart, 750mm bed = plant 750mm apart.
Like all our plants, Alphonse Karr is frost and drought tolerant once established and will benefit greatly from best soil preparation and good maintenance techniques in its first season. Our comprehensive planting & maintenance guides (supplied on purchase) will assist you greatly in giving your Bamboo the start it deserves.
